Brem Hyde, the originator of GardenWorks, grew up with an appreciation for nature and design. Growing up in Massachusetts, his family grew their own flowers and vegetables, while taming and planting large portions of a rural homestead. His great-grandfather was celebrated for tending climbing rosebushes on Long Island—the sources of which Brem still buys from currently. From the time he was able to push a lawnmower, Brem was involved in his family's business of designing and constructing residential and commercial properties—in which he held a number of different jobs until he moved to New York to play music in 1992.
Upon moving to New York, Brem contacted a family friend who was head of landscape at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Brem had helped install the rooftop sculpture garden years earlier. He was instantly given a chance to be in the care of a 2500 square foot terrace with lawn and fountains eighteen stories up, directly beside Central Park. Brem knew that this was the best job he could ever have.
As GardenWorks grew, Brem studied plant maintenance, horticulture and design at the Bronx Botanical Garden, while learning on the job about the unusual conditions of and solutions to urban gardening.
Brem loves living in Brooklyn, where he explores New York City, barbecues in his backyard and listens to a lot of Brazilian music and free form radio.
